Based on insights from From Values to Action by Harry Kraemer
Too many professionals think they have to “wait their turn” before making a real impact—wait until they get the title, the bigger team, the right platform. But From Values to Action reminds us that leadership isn’t about title. It’s about alignment.
Harry Kraemer says, “By word, action, and example, values-based leaders seek to inspire and motivate, using their influence to pursue what matters most.” A values-based leader has a commitment to living and leading in a way that’s true to what you believe. Sounds simple, but it takes consistency, clarity, and courage—especially in the workplace, where pressure to conform is real.
A few standout lessons from the book:
- Start now. Kraemer says, “There is no reason for you to wait until you are a senior leader to make a difference… The fact is things are never going to calm down.”
- Align your team with values, not just skills. Complementary skills are great, but if your team doesn’t share values, you’ll constantly fight friction.
- Communicate your values often. Even if you’ve defined them clearly, communication isn’t automatic. Reinforcement matters.
- Influence is a two-way street. Want to lead well? Listen well. Seek feedback. Influence only works when it’s reciprocal.
Bottom line? If you’re waiting for the perfect time to lead with your values, stop. The time is now. Start where you are, with what you believe.
